The Atule Screws.........and the Cuban Crisis

The story on the Atule's screws is as follows:

The Friday before we were on daily ops giving a can an ORI. She was suppose to find us and fire a practice fish 50 feet below us. We were to track it and score it a hit or miss. Well the day got on toward beer time and I suspect the old man had a hot date and wanted to get in. Anyway he announced our course speed and dept over the Gertrude (underwater telephone).  Well this must have p--sed off the cans old man cause the practice fish homed in on our screws. It managed the screw badly and damn near bent the shaft. We spent 4 hours limping and shuddering in on one screw. The following morning they replaced both screws.

Anyway the Squad dog was Pi--ed as he was going to ride us to Virginia. The crane and divers were down from the tender in nothing flat to swap those screws. I don't remember who had the con that day but I think he needs a commendation for fast thinking.
