Formation was for saving a shipmate's life. Can't remember the 1st Seaman's name. Next guy Shearer, Josephson, Hanley, and Shively. We were credited for saving Jeffery Johnson's life. Jeff was asked to go up and look into the paint locker under the deck just forward of the sail. We heard a loud bang when we surfaced. Paint and MEK had spilled in the locker and Jeff was overcome by the fumes and went unconscious. Shearer was the Topside Watch and I was topside and asked who was below in the locker. Shearer said Johnson and I thought he shouldn't be down there with all of those fumes. I went down to tell him to get out of there and fund him halfway in the paint locker, face down in the paint and MEK. He was out cold and I pulled him out and we worked on him for a good 45 minutes. We gave him CPR and oxygen. We swap off the CPR and he finally came around, but he was in very bad shape. He did live, but was physically affected by it all. Thus we all received an award. The Skipper sent the award we received to all of our local news papers. I was a Boy Scout and learned CPR in the Scouts. The local Scout leader asked my parents if the Scout Training could be mentioned in the article. It was and man did I take a ribbing over that.
