Glenn "Erik" Keiffer FT2(SS)

Glenn came to the Atule from USS James Madison (SSBN-627)
in 1967. He was on board for a Gitmo Run and for a trip to Fort Lauderdale,
Florida for sound tests. This consisted of sailing many times passed sound buoys
to determine sound problems. This turned out to be very good liberty for both of
us. (but that's another story) I knew Glenn as "Erik" (a nickname a
very good friend gave him) Erik and I rode motorcycles all over Florida and
South Carolina. He was sent to Charleston to await orders for the Rayburn. I
asked for the Trigger at Charleston and believe it or not, I got what I asked
for. Erik and I rode bikes and chased the wind until I received orders to Viet
Nam. Erik was a good friend. Glenn decided to depart the Navy and was discharged
in October 1968. Glenn has settled at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and works for the
City of Pittsburgh as a Fireman. Glenn retired in 2001. |

Thomas E. Morgan

I served aboard Atule from
September, 1967, to September, 1969, when I left it in the yards at Philly for
decommissioning and was transferred to a new construction fast attack in
Portsmouth, NH. I was a Torpedoman and moved up
from TMSN to TM2 (SS) over the
course of my tour on Atule. I was released from duty in October,
1970, at the Charleston shipyards. Since that time I have finished
my education, married, and reared two children who are both in university
in the U.S. The greatest change came for me when I was a senior in
college and was confronted with a challenge from a classmate to examine
the claims of Jesus Christ for my life. At the age of 24
I became a Christian and a couple of years later went to seminary and
have been in the ministry since that time. My wife and I are
missionaries with an Independent Baptist agency and have lived in Italy,
Arizona and currently we live in a suburb of Melbourne, Australia, where
I am teaching in a college and working in a ministry establishing new
churches.

Russell
Smith, FTG3(SS)

I was a reservist who served
aboard the Atule from spring of 66 to the summer of 67. My daughter just went
on line with a new computer and we looked up the Atule on the internet and
there you were. A face I recognized immediately. It was wonderful to see some
of the faces that I remember. The pictures of the ship were great and the
history brought back many memories. I may have some old pictures myself. I
will have to look.

Gary L. Walker
EM2(SS)

I was an EM2(SS) on the Atule from 1964 to
1967. I left the
Atule for the USS Trigger SS-564. The Trigger was in the yards at Charleston.
After 6 months, I received orders for Viet Nam. I was assigned to the Armed
Forces Police in DaNang. After Viet Nam, I was transferred to shore duty at
NavSta Pearl. My duty assignment was that of Lead Electrician to Water
Transportation, Ford Island. We were responsible for the Harbor Patrol Boats,
the boats that ran back and forth from NavSta and Ford Island, the Ferryboats
that go to Ford Island, and the boats that take tourist out to the Arizona
Memorial. I had been told, from many tourist, that a "strange'" sense
of calmness comes over you when you stepped onto the Memorial. Many evenings I
would go to the Memorial to lower the colors and I would stay longer than
needed. I found that no matter what was on my mind, I would always come back
feeling better.
I left the Navy in 1972. I join the Air Force Reserves in
1980. I served the Air Force as a Flight Engineer on C-141's and C-5's. My last
military hurrah was during Desert Shield/Desert /Storm. I was again on active
duty for another year. I finally retired from the Air Force in 1992. I am
married. We have 7 boys and one girl, and 9 grandchildren. I am still working
for the government as Civilian Supervisor at Travis AFB, Ca.
